Almost every magician disappears as part of their act.
Most of them reappear within seconds, but not if you’re Melinda Saxe. Better known by her stage name, “Melinda – First Lady of Magic,” she was the only female magician to have her own headlining magic show on the Las Vegas Strip during the 1990s. In 2002, she stopped performing to start a family with her new husband in California. After a 10-year hiatus, the First Lady of Magic has reappeared in Vegas. Now she’s performing as a featured act in “V-The Ultimate Variety Show” at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

1/19/2012 - Reappearing Act

by Katherine Fernelius
Vegas SEVEN

Melinda The First Lady of Magic was an iconic magician in the era of big hair, neon colors and smoke machines. And in Las Vegas, that era lasted from the ’80s to the early 2000s.

But to see Melinda Evensvold (née Saxe) at the height of her fame, we look back to her eponymous Disney special. The year was 1997, and the hourlong show, which aired on CBS on a Friday night, showed a magician who looked more like a magician’s assistant. She had long, blond hair and at least a dozen costume changes, including evening gowns, body suits and the slitted dress of cartoon sex-symbol Jessica Rabbit (hey, it’s Disney). Through narrative and dance, Melinda wrapped her magic in an elaborate story about an imagined girl magician who lived in a castle. Melinda did traditional tricks, such as making her Pegasus disappear, but she also performed extraordinary illusions, such as being stabbed through the stomach and lifted by an 8-ton industrial drill.

1/12/2012 - Show producer David Saxe is on a mission to bring vintage Vegas back

by John Katsilometes
Las Vegas Weekly

When David Saxe was a little boy, he’d share in a bowl of cereal with his father every morning and watch his favorite TV show, the kitschy, simplistically imaginative Japanese sci-fi series Ultraman. Saxe was fascinated by the show’s simple production and its heroic central character, a futuristic space alien who battled all variety of otherworldly monsters and menacing figures. The only boy and youngest child in a family of three kids, David was also enamored of his father, something of a heroic figure who always made sure to spend this quality TV time with his son.

It’s funny, it’s touching, and at certain points, it’ll make your heart beat so fast you’ll feel like you’re suffering from supraventricular tachycardia, a term we totally didn’t just copy and paste off the Internet.

At the center of this family-friendly show is, at you might suspect, Gregory Popovich.

12/22/2011 - FOX More Access Interview - Marc Savard

Your body has more medicine than the pharmacy could ever sell you.

That's just one line from this awesome interview I did with the wonderful Claudine from Fox's "More Access" here in Las Vegas.

If you don't know my story, well this interview is a great place to start! Check it out

We talked about my history as a hypnotist, my life changing car accident and how I was able to turn that into one of the most successful recovery stories, ever.

All by using the power of my own mind.

Do you believe that its possible for someone to think of themselves sick, just by mere thought?

So, it's the exact opposite to think yourself well. Ideas and thoughts can cause organic change and healing.

Check out my interview now!

11/07/2011 - 'First Lady of Magic' living in the moment after joining show

Mike Weatherford
Las Vegas Review Journal

Melinda can laugh about it now, sitting with her 4-year-old daughter asleep on her lap.

"The First Lady of Magic" recalls watching an old video from one of her fledgling efforts at the Marina hotel, circa 1990.

"We laughed so hard we cried," she says. "I came out of the spaceship dressed like Barbarella." A guy dressed as a robot was doing the robot -- you know, the dance. "With silver makeup on and the whole thing. He brought me my zombie ball."

The zombie ball, which floated up and around a piece of fabric, was a signature illusion. Unfortunately, it was also a signature of your better children's birthday parties.

09/22/2011 - Skaters Defect to 'V The Ultimate Variety Show'

By John Katsilometes
Las Vegas Sun

"Neither “Absinthe” nor “V – The Ultimate Variety Show” features an act depicting a tug-of-war, but maybe they should.

The announcement Thursday that “Absinthe” would be returning to the Roman Plaza at Caesars Palace has sparked a spirited competition between that show and “V” for circus-inspired, variety-show supremacy in Las Vegas.

...

But without fanfare, the longtime Vegas producer also has been toiling away while revamping “V” to go toe-to-toe -- or more appropriately, skate-to-skate -- with “Absinthe.”

Today, Saxe and a spokesman for “Absinthe” confirmed that the Skating Aratas are no longer going to be in the tented showcase at Caesars. Saxe said he has signed the husband-and-wife team of Vittorio and Geniia Arata, and the two will be featured in a bolstered version of “V – The Ultimate Variety Show” that will relaunch in mid-October. Or at around the time “Absinthe,” with a different skating act and a more structurally sound performance tent, debuts..."

Meet Iouri and Nikolai, two Russian master handbalancers who are part of the largest circus oral history project in the United States, a one-of-kind project designed to get the wacky and zany stories-and one-of-a-kind tricks on audio and video tape. And preferably before their breathtaking ancient art becomes a distant memory, bamboozled by Cirque du Soleil’s billion dollar empire that has more costumes and masks than death defying tricks.

08/09/2011 - John Padon muses on ‘Sin City Comedy’ false start and performing for an audience of one — Steve Wynn

By John Katsilometes
Las Vegas Sun

John Padon jokes that a few years ago, he found himself “staring down the barrel of a cruise ship career.”

Chasing divorcees and overindulging in the ample food and drink available while the ship is at sea are not for him.

Padon opens for Carrot Top (warning: adult language)

“You play one night a week, and if it’s early in the week, you’re famous, which is good and bad,” he said during the latest episode of “Kats With the Dish” on KUNV 91.5-FM. “You’ve got fans, or you’ve got people who hate you.”

So Padon pulled into port, as it were, and started "Sin City Comedy" at V Theater at Miracle Mile Shops. The rockin’ mix of stand-up comedy and burlesque dancing opened April 1, 2009.

The club at V Theater at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood is shooting two shows Tuesday as a pilot for a new series set in the club, which is part of the David Saxe entertainment empire at the Planet Hollywood retail center, where one also can find a spiffy Ben Sherman jacket or a fine jewelry-cleaning solvent.

Why Go Las Vegas

Let's face it: Las Vegas is a sexy place to be. Nightclubs are the perfect place to don your hottest clothes, and there's plenty of eye candy at the pool. That said, it can also be a bit intimidating, which is why one of the most popular attractions for those in town for bachelorette parties and girlfriends getaways is a girls-only activity.
Stripper 101 is a seductive but fun class for women of all ages who want to have a good time while revealing their sexy selves in a non-threatening atmosphere. Named by Cosmopolitan as one of the top 16 ways to have a blast in Las Vegas, Stripper 101 delivers on its promise to turn an adventurous Las Vegas vacation into a memorable one. As a side bonus, it turns out that dancing like a stripper and learning how to pole dance are also an awesome workout for the body.

In Sin City, it's not a far leap to assume that the V in Vegas could easily stand for Variety. After all, this is the city that declared gambling wasn't enough of a guilty pleasure to keep people coming back. So they equipped the city with $5 pig-out buffets, legal brothels, the all-night liquor stores and, of course, the lively shows to keep you entertained. Dont let anyone tell you different, Vegas is all about variety. Speaking of variety, Planet Hollywood currently has the aptly titled V playing in their V theater. Vegas loves that V, apparently. The Miracle Mile Malls theater inside of Planet Hollywood is called V, and V: The Ultimate Variety Show is its namesake production. Many Las Vegas shows at other hotels and casinos stick with a certain theme. For instance, Cirque du Soleil has their acrobatics. Sin City Bad Girls have their rock tunes and bare breasts. V has a wide ranging scope of the most talented amateurs around showing their skills in the city's largest variety show. To the frequenter of Vegas entertainment, some of the acts may not seem overly original. V pulls in talent, no matter where they play. This means that someone on the stage at V may have their own show at another hotel. It all depends on whose hot and whose not.. ......READ MORE

by MIKE WEATHERFORD
Las Vegas Review-Journal
Posted on October 14, 2010

The road began at Woodstock for Bill DeLoach, who ended up touring with Frankie Valli and working for Danny Gans before opening his own show, "Echoes of the '60s."
The new V Theater tenant is a '60s pop and rock revue with "a little bit of heart," DeLoach says of his telling stories about his career between songs.
DeLoach backed Gans for his eight years at The Mirage. He brings two other members of the late impressionist's band -- guitarist Freddy Champoux and drummer Rapheal Erardy -- into the new venture.
"After the sadness and heartbreak went away it was, 'Uh-oh. Now what?' " DeLoach says of the band's status after Gans died in May of last year.
Marilyn James and Ray Allaire are the featured singers in the revue, which opts for an ensemble approach over costumed impersonations. DeLoach charts a chronological path through the '60s, though his own career started only after he hitchhiked to the Woodstock festival as an 18-year-old fresh from high school.
DeLoach credits producers Greg and Gracie Fulljames for helping the show make the leap from showcases in locals casinos. "The element I've been missing for years is someone to handle the business side of things," he says. ...READ MORE

9/16/2010 - American Storm - Band Of Brothers - THE NEW TODAY IN LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

The weather may be cooling down in Las Vegas, but there's still one place in town that generates so much heat that you'll think it was perpetually summer – and that's at the show American Storm, playing at the V Theater.

Who knew that a production born out of a reality show would last this long and be so successful? The production just celebrated their fifth anniversary and have come a long way from when they started out in 2005, at the Riviera Hotel. The show's beginnings can be traced back to VH1's "Strip Search," which featured Australia's "Thunder From Down Under" creator Billy Cross and VH1's Rachel Perry, as they trekked across America to find a talented group of men who would compete against each other for one of seven coveted spots in the new male dance revue, American Storm, which was officially launched on July 29, 2005.
